Place Ducale in Charleville-Mézières
A twin of Place des Vosges in Paris, Charleville-Mézières’ Place Ducale has lined its pink brick and ochre stone pavilions since 1606. Terraces come alive in warm weather, and clocks punctuate conversations. Every two years, the World Puppet Theatre Festival takes over the city. Having a coffee under the arcades is a lovely excuse to begin an encounter.
In Rimbaud’s footsteps
A native of Charleville, Arthur Rimbaud left his mark on the city: the Maison des Ailleurs traces his travels, and the Rimbaud Museum, in a former mill on the banks of the Meuse, displays manuscripts and photographs. His tomb stands in the old Charleville cemetery. Reading his verses aloud, by the water, is a modest, profound way to share meaningful words.
Meanders of the Meuse at Monthermé
To the north, the Meuse winds through spectacular meanders: in Monthermé, it embraces the town in a horseshoe shape. The Roche-à-Sept-Heures viewpoint and Roc la Tour, a granite wall shaped by time, offer striking panoramas. On Lyad, members from the Ardennes share their favourite trails; it is up to you to find someone to hear the forest sing with.
